ONE OF OREGON’S HERITAGE VINEYARDS

ESTABLISHED IN 1973

“Let’s check out Oregon, California’s feeling a little crowded” - Roger Layne, 1972

They took a detour, pulling off of the brand new I5 freeway, and traveling down a side road through a little known Valley called the Applegate. As they drove down Kubli Rd., they saw a young Dick Troon hanging a sign in front of a new vineyard that read “Troon Vineyard, fine wines since 1975.” “Can you grow grapes here?” asked Roger. “Oh yes! Absolutely!” replied Dick. “Know of any plots for sale?” asked Roger. “Well, I know of one…” replied Dick. And that’s how the story began.

Layne Merlot is special. Structured, with notes that include anise, tobacco and strawberry, Layne Merlot belongs to the exclusive club of West Coast Merlots grown in cool climates. Ageworthy, expressive, one of a kind.

Cabernet? In Oregon? Yes. In 2004, my father, Andy, visited me after my first harvest at Troon Vineyard. I tasted him on a barrel of Layne Cab. I was worried that it was too tannic, it didn’t have enough fruit. “Wow!” He exclaimed, “I haven’t tried anything like this since Napa in the 70’s. This is really cool.” Layne Cab is just that, a throwback to another time, when Cabernet was picked late, sugars were lower, and tannin was not something to be feared. Layne Cab shows a distinct cedar box and cola nut note that seems to be unique to Cabernet grown in the Applegate Valley.

Acid. In today’s warming climate, sites where fruit ripens with naturally high acidity are something to be prized. We make our Chardonnay in the California style, with barrel fermentation and full malolactic.

Our sparkling is made in the Methode Champenoise style, from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Bottles sit en tirage for two years before disgorging. Red and yellow fruit flavors are offset by notes of brioche and rising bread.
